Attention Families – Tips on Preparing for a Foreign Holiday

Read Time:2 Minute, 26 Second

If you are the head of a growing family, you already know the benefits that planning brings, especially when taking the family on a long trip. When you travel solo, you can pretty much deal with whatever life throws your way, but with the kids in tow, it’s a totally different ball game, and with that in mind, here are a few tips to help you prepare for a family holiday abroad.

  • Pack a first aid kit – This should be second nature; either mum or dad should have a comprehensive travel first aid kit in their luggage (carry-on is best). You never know what the future brings and cuts, bruises and grazes are part and parcel of growing up. There will come a day when you are glad you remembered to pack a first aid kit, it’s just a question of time.
  • Storing important documentation – We advise one parent to wear a body belt with zipper pockets, in which you can store passports, tickets, boarding passes, hotel check-in vouchers and insurance certificates. This makes airport and train station processes much easier, plus you are protected against pickpockets.
  • Sunscreen – Nothing will spoil your holiday like a child with sunburn; if you are spending a few weeks at one of the family villas in the Maldives, take enough sunscreen to last the entire time; sunscreen is available locally, but it will be very expensive. This applies to the adults in the group; being on the beach means a cool breeze and you might not feel the heat of the Sun, but by that time, it is too late.
  • Toys – You have two choices; either prohibit any toys or allocate some luggage space and limit each child to a single toy. A soft toy might bring comfort to a tired and irritable 3-year-old on a long flight, which is worth knowing.
  • Prioritise sleep and food – Without these two things, contentment is hard to find for a child, so when travelling long distances, make sure your kids are well-fed and have had enough sleep. Most seasoned parents know this and therefore ensure their children are never overtired and hungry. If you ever decide to take the family on vacation in Connecticut, here are some tips.
  • Always carry wipes – Wipes should always be at hand when you are out with the kids, as these handy inventions are a godsend for mopping up spills and wiping dirty little faces. Hygienic and convenient, always keep a pack of wipes in your luggage for those little accidents and you won’t regret it.

Once you get to your final destination, you can relax and enjoy what should be a fantastic family holiday. Travelling with kids brings with it many challenges and we hope the information in this short article goes some way to making the holiday one to be remembered for all the right reasons.
