Singapore PR (Permanent Residency)

Top 5 Facts of Singapore PR (Permanent Residency)

Read Time:4 Minute, 9 Second

Singapore is a lovely place to work and live. Many have moved to the country initially for studies or job opportunities, and ended up staying. To permanently live in Singapore, however, foreigners and expats need to acquire the Singapore Permanent Residency status before eventually becoming a citizen.

Only by becoming a citizen of Singapore is there a guarantee that one can feel safe from the risk of being uprooted and having to move elsewhere. However, the only way to get Singapore citizenship is by first becoming a Singapore PR for at least 2 years.

Fact #1: 6 types of people who are eligible to apply for Singapore PR

Not everyone is eligible to get Singapore PR. Singapore is such a small country and there are only a limited number of spots available. With increasing local resentment against the pace of foreigners coming into the country, the government is treading on thin ice. To ensure a good balance, the government has allowed only some specific groups of people to be eligible for Singapore PR and they are:

  • Spouse of a Singapore citizen or Singapore permanent resident (PR)
  • Unmarried child aged below 21 years old, born within the context of a legal marriage to, or have been legally adopted by, a Singapore citizen or PR
  • Aged parent of a Singapore citizen
  • Holder of an Employment Pass or S Pass
  • Student studying in Singapore
  • Foreign investor in Singapore

There are many other factors that affect one’s chances of getting Singapore PR approval. For more information, get an immigration expert such as Immigration@SG to advice.

Fact #2: Main Purpose of the Singapore PR is Long-Term Stay

While there are many perks to becoming a Singapore PR, the main purpose of permanent residency is to allow a foreigner to live and work in Singapore long-term. Singapore wants people who are committed to contribute to Singapore’s economy, able to integrate into the society, and eventually make Singapore home. Getting the Singapore PR is a stepping stone for many, towards attaining Singapore citizenship.

So by staying long-term in Singapore, it shows the government that one wants to sink roots in Singapore. Having an illustrious, long career, starting a business and/or a family in Singapore helps in this aspect.

Fact #3: Singapore PR is a PERMANENT Status

Many wonder how long the Singapore permanent residency status is valid for. Some think it is only valid for 5 years. The correct answer though, the Singapore permanent residency is a permanent status once one has attained it.

However, there is a Re-Entry Permit (REP) that Singapore PR holders must renew if they intend to go out of Singapore. If a Singapore PR holder happens to be out of Singapore and his/her REP has expired, they cannot enter Singapore as a permanent resident and may lose his/her PR status. Otherwise, Singapore PR holders are free to live and work in Singapore without much limitations.

Fact #4: About 100,000 people apply for Singapore PR every year

Attaining Singapore PR status is highly competitive and difficult. The Singapore government sets very high standards to only allow the best talents to enter Singapore and help the country prosper. Around 100,000 people apply for the Singapore PR every year but only 30% get approved.

While submitting an application is straightforward and easy, an applicant must understand that they must make sure that their applications stand out from the competition! Apart from being eligible and submitting all the correct and relevant documents, applicants must show why they are the best candidate.

Fact #5: Income is not the main determinant to get Singapore PR approval

Contrary to common belief, high income does not guarantee that they get their Singapore PR application approved. Many assume wrongly thinking that the Singapore government is impressed by the amount of taxes or monetary contributions that they make. Yes it is important, but the Singapore government also looks at an applicant’s contributions as a whole, not just monetary. So if an applicant can show how they contribute to Singapore’s society it helps too.

Maybe find out Singaporeans’ problems in their daily lives and create a business that helps solve this problem. Work with government agencies or get prominent Singapore companies involved or endorse your project. This might help in the application better as it not only shows an applicant’s active contribution to the economy but also to the society. It also shows an applicant’s initiative to integrate into the society. Also visit: Happy Easter Religious
